What’s in my medicine cabinet? (a natural doctor and mom of four)

How do you take care of your kids when you believe natural is best? I’ll tell you what’s in my medicine cabinet while I’ve raised my four kids!

As I continue supporting families on their journey to healing and, more importantly, knowing that they have everything it takes to live a healthy and fulfilling life, I want to share some of my favorites to have on hand when emergencies arise!

We know the best medicines are our foods and herbs, bodywork, and lifestyles we prioritize. The most common questions I get are “What do I do when” Learning to trade out harsh medicines or products found in conventional medicine cabinets for gentler holistic measures can be a learning curve for sure. Let’s go over some basics and then dive into my tried and true remedies to have on hand!

  1. Holistic medicine treats the whole person, including the mind, body, and spirit. A holistic medicine cabinet allows you to address various aspects of your health and well-being beyond physical symptoms.
  2. Holistic medicine often emphasizes natural and alternative remedies, such as herbal supplements, essential oils, homeopathic remedies, and dietary supplements. These items in your medicine cabinet allow you to try natural approaches before resorting to conventional medicine for minor ailments.
  3. Holistic medicine encourages self-care and taking proactive steps to maintain good health. Your medicine cabinet can include relaxation aids, meditation tools, natural skincare products, and health-promoting books to support your overall wellness.
  4. Holistic medicine recognizes that individuals have unique health needs and responses. With a holistic medicine cabinet, you can customize your approach to health and have remedies and tools that work best for you and your family.
  5. A holistic medicine cabinet can also include basic first aid supplies, such as bandages, antiseptic creams, and natural remedies for common ailments like headaches, coughs, and colds. This helps you be prepared for minor emergencies and promotes a more holistic approach, even during acute situations.

My suggestions below have been tested, tried, and used by me for over 30 years on all 4 of my kiddos and 1,000 kids that walked through my office! They’ve had every cut, bruise, scrape, and infection. You name it, and we’ve had it. How do I handle that?

So, first of all, what I see a lot, especially starting off, is fevers and ear infections. And I take care of these completely differently than anybody else. Number one, get your kids adjusted. If you need help with that, reach out. I can help you find a chiropractor.

Number two, with fevers, we know that that is simply a calcium loss in the body, so we need to give them calcium lactate

Number three, ear infections (sometimes with fevers, sometimes without), and we want to make sure that, number one, the child’s not in pain, but number two, that that infection doesn’t grow greater. We see three things that can be preventative for this.
  • Regular chiropractic care
  • Hydrogen peroxide in the ears every single night. You just flood it and let it drain out.
  • Elimination of processed dairy and all gluten/wheat
When we know we have a full-on ear infection and think we need an antibiotic, FIRST, get colloidal silver. I put it in the ears. I’ll spray it down the throat. Every 15 min or so to get ahead of the infection.

Fixing Boo-boos

The other crucial thing is cotton gauze. If you are going to clean up wounds, you want to make sure that they are organic. Again, we don’t want to put a heavy chemical into an open wound on the body, so we want to be as natural as possible. Now, band-aids, I love them. And the Wonder Woman bandages are fantastic. So, get the ones that make your kid smile. Absolutely use them every time.

If I have a cut or wound, I’m trying to keep clean; I’ll use colloidal silver. I’ll use essential oils like Lavender and Purification. Those are fantastic tools that you can use to keep wounds clean as they heal. BONUS is the Purification oil is a fantastic tool for bug bites so that the kids aren’t itching them and turning them into more significant infections

Then there’s been some cases where they’ve got more significant cuts, I use a liquid bandage all the time. You pick that up at the grocery store, and it seals it shut. It’s amazing.

Skin rashes or diaper rashes, I love Young Living’s diaper cream. There’s also Calendula. And those are great products that you can get and apply to your baby’s skin, and it helps nourish and coat them beautifully.

The last one that I’m going to teach you which was a hilarious story. We were at an Indian restaurant, and this very, very older woman came over and talked to me about taking my infant, coating them in foil, and baking them in the oven. So immediately, her grandson runs over and starts excusing her and saying, no, no, no, no, we don’t bake our children in the oven. What she’s telling me is that she wanted me to coat my child in olive oil and take a warm towel and coat it, and that would kind of bake in the healing property of the oil and help my child’s skin that was very, very dry at the time. Those remedies are absolutely fantastic.
