Here’s your health secret: save TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR! $10,000 a year. Yes, you read that correctly. Here is how.

Keep your sugars under 40g a day, including fruit. Did you know that 11% of American adults have diabetes, and another 38% are pre-diabetic? Even worse, 30% of children under 18 were diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Now, how are these things connected? When you receive a diabetes diagnosis, your average out-of-pocket yearly cost is over ten thousand dollars. That’s not what insurance covers; that’s what you, out of your bank account, will fork out to care for this disease. What makes me even more upset is that Type 2 Diabetes is one of the easiest things to repair, despite what modern doctors say. There is such a fear surrounding diabetes as a life-ending disease. In reality? It’s a hand-to-mouth disease… This sounds very harsh, but it is far time to wake up to the fact that what we put into our bodies affects us!

On average, American adults eat hundreds of grams of sugar per day. One can of Coca-Cola is 39 grams alone (or ten sugar cubes). A bowl of cereal is 20 grams. That’s over the daily amount of sugar you SHOULD average in a day before 10 AM. When we overload our bodies with more sugar than it’s ever known how to process, it’s no surprise that our bodies break down. On top of diabetes, sugar in the body is directly linked to high blood pressure (yep, in my world, this often is your first sign of diabetes), infertility, inflammation/ pain, weight gain, heart attacks, strokes, and more.

So, how do we fix this terrifying outlook? Food. The easiest way is to grab a food log. It doesn’t have to be complicated but write down absolutely everything you put in your mouth. Then at the end of every week, count how much sugar you’re eating daily. A log is straightforward with the internet; even a piece of paper works! And make sure you’re counting the “zero sugar” or fake sugars you’re using as a substitute because those are just as bad for you, if not worse, due to the chemical makeup on top of the fact that they still give you the sugar spike! Those glucose ups and downs cause increased hunger/ thirst, fatigue, and headaches, leading to many issues involving the heart, kidneys, neuropathy, eyesight issues, and many others over time.

I’ll give you a hint on what to remove first- anything in a package or can, followed by wheat. These two action steps will do more for your health than anything else.

Now I know some of you are saying, “NOOOOOOO! I don’t want to give up my XYZ (insert any sugar/wheat-filled word here),” but let me let you in on another secret. You have a sugar addiction problem. Did you know that sugar activates the same brain pathways as cocaine? Sugar addictions are true and easier to create than people expect. And remember, this is a significant reason you don’t want to quit! But remember terrible twos? Sugar addiction and crashes. Moody teenagers? Sugar addiction and crashes. Cranky adults? You guessed it, sugar addictions and crashes.

It is time that we woke up to what we are putting into our bodies. Everything we eat and drink either helps us or harms us. It is time to wake up and retake control of our health. Cut your sugars. Control your food. Save yourself ten thousand dollars a year. Simple! I know you can do it.
