Jewelry Vs. Heavy Metals

Most of us agree that throwing on fun jewelry for the day is enjoyable! Or perhaps you’re one of those who never take off certain rings, necklaces, or bracelets! You may have even dabbled in the oh-so-popular permanent jewelry recently.
Whichever your style of jewelry-wearing, today we’re sharing some things to consider before you accessorize.
This blog idea came to us after a patient was concerned about ALL jewelry after finding out they had a heavy metal health issue. It is important to distinguish between safe metals that can be worn daily and unsafe ones that you are better off saving money on, no matter how cute.
  1. Material matters. When you consider jewelry you want to wear, it’s essential to know the material it’s made of. Real metals such as silver and gold are often better suited for most skin types. On the flip side, synthetic materials like plastic and enhanced aluminum may irritate the skin and leave micro-plastic residue on the body or within the piercing.
  2. Speaking of piercings, your body may react differently depending on where you are pierced. Remember that the body’s Meridian lines are a network of channels or pathways through which vital energy or “qi” flows in the human body. A piercing in the wrong place could disrupt this energy flow, resulting in symptoms in the skin or nearby organs. These results are based on acupuncture and the importance of not disrupting the meridian lines via surgery or piercings—also, metals matter here, too. Cheaper metals can create irritation, and most people forget the backing – make sure it is pure as well and not an overlay.
  3. While quite popular today, wearing Smart Watches and Oura Rings directly impacts your body – and those around you! Because of the technology used to gather data on your body’s heart rate, pulse, activity levels, sleep, and more, electronic signals are constantly being emitted around and through your body, which can lead to disruptions in mood regulation, sleep, and even hormone balance. While these can bring information to you, it’s important to make changes and then check again rather than constantly having data that may come at a health risk.
Metals commonly used in jewelry that are considered safe for most people include:
  1. Gold: Gold is a popular choice for jewelry because it is hypoallergenic and does not cause skin irritation. However, some may be allergic to alloys mixed with gold to make it more durable.
  2. Platinum: Platinum is another hypoallergenic metal often used in fine jewelry. It is durable and has a beautiful white color.
  3. Sterling Silver: Sterling silver is a popular choice for jewelry and is generally safe for most people. However, some people may experience skin irritation from the copper mixed with the silver to make it more durable.
  4. Titanium: Titanium is a lightweight and durable metal. It is hypoallergenic and does not cause skin irritation.
  5. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is a durable metal. It is hypoallergenic and does not cause skin irritation.
It’s important to note that some people may still have allergies or sensitivities to these metals, so it’s always a good idea to test a small area of skin before wearing new jewelry for an extended period.
Stay mindful of these when you pick out the following pieces of jewelry to wear and feel free to reach out to us if you have questions! If you would like to check in on your body – we would recommend a hair test to check the heavy metals. Order your Hair Test Here!
